The drama ignited in the third inning when Brewers’ Caleb Durbin collided with Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras on a groundout to third. Contreras, stepping back after the catch, sent Durbin tumbling, drawing shouts from the Brewers’ dugout, led by star Rhys Hoskins. Tensions flared further when Brewers pitcher Jose Quintana plunked Contreras in his next at-bat. Unfazed, Contreras grabbed the ball and handed it to Quintana, jogging to first with a cool head.

Contreras got his revenge in the ninth, smashing his ninth home run of the season off Rob Zastryzny and glaring toward the Brewers’ dugout. Postgame, he unleashed a verbal barrage: “One of their players likes to talk from far away, but when he got to my face, he didn’t say s—,” Contreras said, via The Athletic. “I was looking for more than that. He seems to be tough, but he’s a f—ing p—y. I’m not going to name names. He knows who he is.” Asked about Hoskins, he added, “The Brewers player hadn’t said anything to me.”
Hoskins downplayed it, coyly noting, “We were just talking about playing first base.”
