Embracing the Golden Years: A Shelter’s Quest to Find a Loving Home for an 18-Year-Old Senior Cat

Sadly, abandoned senior cats often end their days in shelters. They are left aside by adopters who generally prefer a younger, livelier companion.

When volunteers from the English association Cats Protection rescued an 18-year-old cat, they knew how complicated it would be to find him a family. Assigned to the rescue center in Swindon , the feline, named Dizzy, could have stayed 3 times longer at the shelter than other younger cats. These statistics, reported by BBC News , represent the sad reality of animals abandoned at ages over 11.

Still, Dizzy had it all. He was a very affectionate grandpa whose powerful purring left no one indifferent. And thanks to his beautiful personality, he defied all the odds.

Mutual comfort

Unlike many others, Dawn Green did not come to the shelter to pick up a kitten. The 50-year-old was still grieving following the recent loss of her cat Pyewacket , who was 14 years old.

She said: ” I was going through a difficult time and didn’t feel like I had the energy to keep up with a kitten […] I was really looking for companionship rather than a bundle of excitement. ” .

The woman is used to seniors on 4 legs and has not been slowed down by Dizzy ‘s health problems . For the shelter team, she was the perfect owner, the one who would know how to take care of their protégé.

So, 2 months after his arrival, the cat returned to his new home. He never stopped showing his gratitude to his new mistress and loved sharing tender moments with her.

Today, the adorable Dizzy is no longer in this world. His human spoke with emotion: “ I know he had a good time here and I gave him the best end-of-life care he could have. Until the last second, he knew he was loved. I will miss Dizzy very much. He didn’t stay here long but he made a big impression .”

A spokesperson for Cats Protection , shared Dawn ‘s words on Facebook and dedicated her story to all adopters of older cats. These rescuers offer a beautiful end of life to animals cast aside, and remind everyone that there is no age to be loved.
