Margo, a timid cat who shies away from affectionate gestures, undergoes a remarkable transformation in her behavior after leaving the shelter.
After sadly losing her beloved cat, Diane Sontum was determined to open her heart to a new 4-legged companion. While going to the local shelter in Laramie, Wyoming (United States), she met Margo, a pretty red tabby cat. Very stressed, the kitten refused to be touched at the shelter. Everything changed when Diane welcomed her into her home…
Diane Sontum shared her daily life for years with her cat Ricki . When the latter recently passed away, she left a big void in Diane ‘s heart .
To help her in her grief, Diane decided to become a volunteer foster mother for other kitties and she turned to a local association: the Laramie Animal Welfare Society ( LAWS ) located in Wyoming ( States) . -United ).
A painful experience
The association immediately thought of one of their residents: Margo , a little 3-year-old red cat . Like Diane , the kitty had just gone through a painful experience. Brought to the shelter a month earlier, Margo could not stay with her family after the arrival of a newborn.
” She had been surrounded by a family who loved her, but they had a baby and… it wasn’t working with the baby ,” Diane explained .
When she went to pick up Margo , volunteers warned her new foster mother that the cat was having trouble adjusting to life at the shelter. She didn’t let anyone approach or touch her. “ I was told she didn’t want to be petted or touched and was extremely stressed about being abandoned ,” Diane Sontum told The Dodo .
A beautiful meeting
When Diane arrived , Margo was already in her cage, which meant their first official meeting would be at home and not at the shelter.
Once she got home, Diane placed the shipping crate in a quiet room and opened the door. Surprisingly, Margo came out of her cage and ran straight to Diane to ask for some affection. This touching scene was immortalized on video and posted on TikTok .
“ They told me she was so shy and wouldn’t come see me. When I opened this crate, it was our first presentation. I think it went pretty well. “, Diane said enthusiastically.
The gradual rapprochement of the fearful little cat
A few days later this beautiful display of affection, Margo unfortunately returned to her fearful attitude . She became distant again and refused any physical contact , even if she came from time to time to rub against Diane ‘s legs .
The foster mother would have liked the kitty to feel comfortable at home right away, but she also knew that Margo needed time to relax and get used to her new environment. “ I’m really happy that she’s here, and I’m willing to be patient with her to help her recover from what she’s been through ,” says Diane .
The little cat is also making progress every day. She explored the house as well as the space set up in the backyard for Dean , Diane ‘s spurred tortoise .
Margo also begins to accept some caresses. “ She doesn’t cuddle, but we get closer ,” says her provisional mother.
The kitty is still waiting for a permanent family, but with this bond which strengthens every day with Diane , there is a good chance that Margo is already exactly in her place…
