Christina Fulton, the ex-partner of Nicolas Cage, has spoken out after her son, Weston Coppola Cage, was sentenced to a two-year mental health diversion program for assaulting her in April 2024. Weston, 34, was ordered to complete the program following the incident, which led to significant emotional and legal turmoil for the family.
In an interview with TMZ, Christina, 57, addressed her ex-husband, Nicolas Cage, and shared a heartfelt message: “Take care of my son, our son.” Despite the turmoil, Christina emphasized her continued love for Weston, saying, “I love you, son.”
Weston, who has not apologized for the assault, was sentenced to a diversion program for two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon, after an emotional statement from Christina detailing the horrifying night of the attack.
The Incident and Legal Outcome
Weston was arrested in July 2024 after a violent altercation with his mother. He had set his apartment on fire before becoming enraged and physically attacking Christina. She described how Weston grabbed her by the hair, pushed her into an elevator, and began to suffocate her. The intervention of a friend who risked their life to stop the attack ultimately saved Christina’s life.
At the sentencing, Los Angeles County Judge Enrique Monguia acknowledged Weston’s mental health struggles as a major factor in the incident. He emphasized that Weston was experiencing a breakdown during the assault, leading to the decision to grant him a mental health diversion program.
Weston’s attorney, Michael Goldstein, expressed appreciation for the court’s decision, stating that Weston has been undergoing treatment and is in a better mental space. Goldstein also expressed hope that, after completing the program, Weston’s charges could eventually be dismissed.
Conditions of the Sentence
As part of the program, Weston is required to stay out of trouble and avoid any violence or harassment. Additionally, he must make restitution to Christina for the harm caused. A progress report is expected in July 2025, with the possibility of the charges being dismissed in April 2027 if Weston successfully completes the program.
Fulton also delivered a victim impact statement in court, recalling the trauma she experienced. She expressed the difficulty of preparing for the incident, adding, “Nothing prepared me for April 28th, 2024, the night my son almost took my life.” In her emotional statement, she called for Weston to get the help he needs, despite the attack.
The Road Ahead
While the legal process moves forward, Christina’s battle is far from over. In February 2025, she filed a lawsuit against both Weston and Nicolas Cage, accusing the actor of enabling Weston’s behavior, which led to the attack. However, she dismissed Cage from the lawsuit in March 2025.
Weston’s progress will be monitored throughout the next two years, and his future in the legal system hinges on his ability to complete the mental health program successfully.
