Trump ‘furious’ over Ukraine attack on Druzhba pipeline. L2

August 23, 2025 by Khanh Ly

President Trump is “very angry” after Ukraine attacked the Druzhba pipeline used by Russia to transport oil to Central Europe, according to a letter released by Hungary.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s ruling Fidesz party today released a letter from its leader to US President Donald Trump, in which he complained about Ukraine’s drone attack on the Druzhba pipeline on August 13.

The pipeline passes through Ukrainian territory and is used to transport Russian oil to Hungary, Slovakia and other countries in Central Europe.

“Viktor, I don’t like the news and I’m very angry about it. Tell Slovakia that. You are a great friend of mine,” Trump responded in the letter.

The US president has not commented on the information.

The letter was published after Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces attacked a pumping station in Russia’s Bryansk region on August 21, again paralyzing oil transfers through the Druzhba pipeline, which had been restored two days earlier.

In a letter to the European Commission today, the Hungarian and Slovak governments said the latest Ukrainian attack could cut off Russian oil supplies to the two countries for at least five days, calling on the agency to take action to ensure the security of supplies.

Responding to Budapest’s earlier criticism of Kiev’s attacks on the Druzhba pipeline, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stressed that “it is Russia, not Ukraine, that started the conflict and refuses to end it.”

“Hungary has been warned for years that Russia is not a reliable partner,” Sybiha wrote on the social network X. “Yet Hungary has tried to maintain its dependence on Russia, even after the conflict broke out. You can complain to your friends in Moscow.”

Budapest has maintained close ties with Moscow since Russia launched its campaign in Ukraine in early 2022. Since receiving a temporary exemption from the European Union’s ban on Russian oil imports, Hungary has increased its purchases of Russian crude through its overland pipeline network, benefiting greatly from the drop in oil prices.
